Play’n GO is back with a sequel that’s been several years in the making. The original Gemix slot had a wide range of features and Gemix 2 built upon these. But the new Gemix 100 has revamped them and taken things to a new level. Don’t worry: the dwarves, princesses and wizards motif is still intact, but let’s have a look at what has changed over the last few years.
This cluster-pays slot has a 7x7 grid. A winning cluster consists of at least 5 matching symbols which are touching horizontally or vertically. If you land 15+ of the same symbol, you can win anywhere between 7.5x and 250x the stake.
Every time you hit a win, those symbols will disappear and more symbols will drop down. Every time this happens, the win multiplier will increase by +1x. This cascading function continues until there are no more wins. You can potentially get the multiplier up to 100x!
You’ll notice that a symbol pattern will appear on the grid on each spin. If you manage to land enough winning symbols within its positions and ‘clear’ them, you’ll raise the multiplier by 5x and travel to one of the other 2 magic worlds.
The dwarf world is the default, but you can also travel to the world of either the princess or the wizard. In each world, the Wilds and their specific characteristics are triggered randomly when players fail to hit a win. For example, up to 10 dwarf Wilds can be scattered around the board. The Princess Wilds can spread from one edge of the grid to the other. In the Wizard’s world, up to 4 sticky Wilds can appear.
If you manage to accumulate 25 winning symbols on a spin, the Crystal Charge is triggered. Alternatively, if on the same spin you manage to get up to 35 winning symbols, the Super Crystal Charge will double the multiplier for any ensuing wins.
When Crystal Charge or Super Crystal Charge is triggered, you’ll benefit from 1 of 4 features.
The only problem is it’s actually quite difficult to accumulate 25 winning symbols, let alone 35. Likewise, I like how the Multiplier increases by 1x with each consecutive win, but it can be difficult to accumulate wins.
The accumulation of 25 and 35 winning symbols on a spin triggers Crystal Charge and Super Charge respectively. See symbols transformed for more potential wins. Super Charge also doubles the multiplier.
When you don’t hit a win, up to 10 dwarf Wilds might be added to the screen. Fill the random grid pattern with winning symbols to be transported to one of two other worlds, where you can benefit from expanding Wilds or sticky Wilds.
The game has a 7x7 game area and you have to land quite a few of the same symbol before you’ll get near a decent win. That said, some of the high pays are worth a pretty penny, so you can see some big wins even without triggering the features.
There’s no free spins round, so all the features are accessible via the base game. A lot of their functions can really help you hit big wins; however, you do notice the game’s high volatility when you consider how often they trigger - I was rarely able to trigger them. The cascades and the multipliers are the ones you’ll probably benefit from the most.
The RTP is a fairly normal 96.2%, but the max win of 25,000x is impressive. Unfortunately, the odds of hitting that figure are apparently 1,000,000,000 to 1, so that does put something of a dampener on things.
The game is set in what I assume to be an underground dwarf mine located in some mystical woods. Despite the gems protruding from the ceiling, it’s quite dark and murky. The only real source of light is the lanterns emitting a green glow.
This is a game more geared toward features than visuals. The graphics are quite basic - little has been improved since the original - and although there’s a lot of colour, everything looks a little flat. Think early 90’s games consoles.
Despite the complexity of the features, the developers have done a good job of keeping everything clearly laid out. I didn’t need to read the instructions to work out how the game works. If you choose to play the game on mobile, you’ll have very much the same experience as if you were to play on desktop.
Although the visuals are underwhelming, I did enjoy the music. It’s a slow whimsical number that also has an eeriness about it. It’s got a nice catchy melody, and it isn’t at all repetitive.
If you’re a fan of the original Gemix and not a fan of change, you’ll like Gemix 100. I’m a bit disappointed by the visuals, which are more or less the same as in the original, but the wide range of features does somewhat make up for that.
