The action takes place on a 5x4 grid and the object of the game is to land matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel. Do that, and you’ll see your balance increase. The low-pay symbols are the gems of varying colours and a 5-of-a-kind can be worth up to 4x the stake. The different pieces of mining equipment constitute the high pays with a 5-of-a-kind made up of these worth up to 25x the stake.
Some of the symbols are split laterally - whenever one of them is part of a winning combination, it multiplies the win by 2x. Wilds substitute for all pay symbols and can carry multipliers of 2x, 3x, 5x or even 10x in value. Wilds can be split too! If a split Wild falls, it can potentially carry 2 different multipliers.
Hitting 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols will trigger 10, 15 or 25 free spins, respectively. The round plays out more or less the same as the base game, so all the split symbols are still in play. Dwarf & Dragon is very easy to play. It isn’t a slot I’d recommend to people who’re after complex features, yet it still has plenty going for it. It’s a no-nonsense game that does what it sets out to do very well. There are no paylines and the grid dimensions are just 5x4, but thanks to the split symbols, there’s an ample 1,024 win ways, so you can expect to see plenty of action. The fact that the split symbols also carry multipliers is a nice touch, as are the split Wilds that carry their independent multipliers.
Typical of slots geared towards the more casual player, apart from a change of music and colour, the Free Spins round doesn’t seem at all different to the base game. That said, it felt like the split symbols fell more frequently, but there’s no mention of this being an actual feature, so it could be just me. All in all, both the base game and Free Spins are both very fun to play.

Dwarf & Dragon’s RTP is a very impressive 96.59%. Its volatility is high, but I found it to pay out fairly regularly, and quite decent sums as well. Apart from my own luck, this is probably down to the 1,054 win ways and the multiplier-carrying split symbols and Wilds. I also got the impression that the Free Spins bonus wasn’t too difficult to trigger. I was hardly spinning for an eternity before I managed to land the necessary number of scatters. Given the volatility and how often I managed to hit wins, I’d say the 14,000x max win is within reach for some lucky players.
The setting is a mine/cavern littered with glowing blue and purple stalactites and stalagmites. The titular dragon has wrapped itself around the 5x4 game area. Next to its tail, on the right hand side of the grid, is the titular dwarf looking chuffed with himself - I assume because of the massive red gem he’s holding.
The reels are well animated, but there’s very little else going on in the way of movement, although the colours are deep and the cartoon graphics are detailed enough. I found the sound of the bassy string orchestra playing in the background highly immersive, but I did find the clicking sound of the reels a little irritating. In the Free Spins bonus, you’re treated to some uptempo accordion, which personally made me think of a sunny day in France rather than a day down t’ pit!
I played the game on my mobile for a bit, and it looked and sounded just as good on there as it did on my laptop.
