It seems that Thunderkick’s initial celebrations never came to an end, and rather than putting everything away and starting again, they simply extended the festivities. The result? Carnival Queen 2 with an upbeat approach to expanding reels, progressive multipliers and free spins galore. If you find yourself still standing when all other revellers have faded away, you could be walking off with the 20,000x max reward.

Apparently, the party is up and running once again but how it compares to the first fiesta, I'm not exactly sure. I wasn't privy to that review and so this queen will have to be assessed without any prejudgment. Not always a bad thing, and hopefully these expanding reels, multipliers and free spins will provide enough enthusiasm to keep the frivolities alive for some time to come.
Anyone who loves a slot with ADHD is in for a real treat today. This grid can’t sit still for one moment as it’s constantly distracted and thinking about something else. The smallest group of winning symbols is two golden crowns and for this, you pick up a 1x prize. Six of them will get you a 10x prize and this is the maximum symbol win. Royal symbols will offer payouts ranging between 0.10x and 1.50x.
The game area doesn't offer a standard number of symbols across each of the rows and you'll have to keep guessing with each spin as you wait to see what's going to land. You have 5,040 initial win ways and this can change if a wild symbol turns up.
Wild symbols explode and substitute for other regular payers. As a result of the explosion, they help expand the reels and eventually bring you over 100,000 win ways. New symbols take the place of any exploded ones or other winning symbols that have formed part of a payout combo. With each winning combo in the same sequence, you watch the multiplier grow from an initial x1 with an infinite ceiling on this calculation. After a losing spin, that multiplier heads back down to earth.
Three scatter symbols will take you away from the party to a private section where all spins are free! You gain 12 free spins upon entry and if you have more scatter symbols landing, you get an extra four spins. Two scatter symbols will grab you another three free spins during the bonus round.
The bonus party continues into the early hours as you spin for free and watch more of the same action across the bonus grid. The only real difference here is that the multiplier grows with each winning sequence but won't simply shoot back down to x1 when you finally hit a losing spin.
You can make each spin two times or five times more likely to trigger the bonus game by paying an additional stake. If you want to make the bonus game arrive roughly once in every 10 spins, then you'll have to pay 10x and if you'd like to guarantee one wild with your spins, the price is 5x. Players outside the UK can go straight into the bonus game for 100x and the same can happen for 175x if they'd like to see a minimum of 10,000 win ways with each spin.
At the start of each spin, you have various quantities of symbols on each reel, creating a maximum of 5,040 ways to win a reward. However, this can change when the exploding wild symbol appears and destroys other symbols around it. The row height will increase and eventually, you might have 111,649 ways.
Each spin begins with an x1 multiplier, which signals your standard payout for the first win. After winning symbols are removed and new ones come onto the game area, this multiplier increases by +1. With each following win in the same sequence, this multiplier moves ever skywards without restriction. Once the wins come to an end, the infinite multiplier figure resets.
Grab yourself three or more bonus scatter symbols and you'll be off to play at 12 free spins and you can pick up extra spins for landing extra scatters. The current multiplier, which is present at the point of triggering the bonus game, will continue into the feature and grows larger with each winning spin. This figure will not reset after a losing spin takes place, so you could see some interesting results as you near the end of your bonus spins.
With such high volatility, it's hard not to approach this game with a little trepidation. The base game spins seemed to be quite generous for me but I can imagine that some players will hit a cold streak, which not only hurts their balance but also their concentration levels. Without a win, the multiplier can't grow and the results can be a little sad at times. Like I said, that wasn't the case for me and my balance stayed above where it started for quite some time. The bonus game offered a little more firepower with the multiplier continuing to enhance the rewards, but the 20,000x max win still felt like it was a million miles away.
Carnival Queen 2 has a Latino look but the soundtrack is pushing more towards more of a 70s jazz-funk number rather than upbeat samba. Fireworks explode in the background and all of the characters are dressed perfectly to match the occasion. The crowds look on from the buildings lining the carnival street and everything has a generally happy and colourful aura about it. No major complaints here!
It's quite nice when I can't compare one game to its predecessor, as you generally have a preconceived idea that the developer should be doing more to separate the two titles. In this case, I'll give Thunderkick the benefit of the doubt and assume that they’ve gone above and beyond to make Carnival Queen 2 feel completely different!
Overall, there’s a fun feel and the perpetual symbol growth, along with progressive multipliers, also help to keep the party moving along nicely. The bonus game could have been enhanced a lot more but you can't have everything, I guess. I look at the 20,000x max win with a little scepticism, but it's there on paper at least.
