I'm not sure who the star of the show is here – is it Mia or is it the ape? Seemingly, the ape rules the roost but Mia appears to be potentially the most beneficial of the two characters with her ability to add extra free spins, wilds and multipliers. Deep in the jungle, you’re faced with a 5x4 set of reels with some strange sticky frames and lots of wild action. There are 20 paylines and across these, you can land royal symbols with maximum payouts worth 1x and four picture symbols, which reach rewards of up to 10x. A five-of-a-kind win is the most you can grab for any individual symbol.
Wild symbols will substitute for any of the above and as they land, they leave behind a frame. This frame can acquire extra wild symbols and increase its multiplier. This can happen five times and bring a 5x multiplier to any wins that pass through it.

Scatter symbols can help increase the boost bar at the top of the reels and this could help you when you reach the free spins bonus. You need scatters to land in pairs in order to increase the meter and if you get to 100, then you'll feel the benefit in the bonus game.
Land two scatter symbols on the top three rows and you trigger a respin mechanic that keeps the scatters in place and nudge them down one step at a time. In that same sequence, the rest of the reels respin and the pair of scatter symbols are continuously added to your bonus meter.

The best you can get is 12 Mia symbols with a 10x multiplier and 5 extra spins.
Overall, I walked away from this slot slightly up from where I started but I didn't make any huge gains – that's not to say that you won't do much better though! The wild frames can enhance your wins as they build up their multipliers during the base game but the free spins bonus is obviously more attractive thanks to the extra multipliers that can apply to all wins as you build up the progress bar. The volatility is medium and the RTP is 96.04%.
The jungle setting has been well crafted by Foxium and apart from the disappointing lack of animation in the background, it still sets the scene nicely enough. It looks great on smaller mobile screens and all devices benefit from some fairly typical tribal/jungle sounds.
Ape Rulez benefits from medium volatility, which should be fairly respectful of your balance as you play and with the base game enhancers, you could see some decent wins swinging through the trees. It's not the best-looking creation out there but it does a decent enough job. The bonus game was my favourite part as is often the case.
