Play takes place on a 5x3 game area with 10 paylines. To win, all you have to do is land at least 3 matching symbols along them - starting from the leftmost reel.
The game’s low-pay symbols are the suited 10 to Ace cards. A 5-of-a-kind made up of these can be worth between 10x and 15x the stake. Pragmatic Play’s Ancient Egypt Classic does look more aimed at veteran slot purists. Having said that, it’s highly volatile, has very valuable symbols and has a potentially very lucrative free spins round. Perhaps it’ll have a broader appeal after all.
The layout reflects this slot's simple payline mechanic and it’s very easy to play. For starters, the most valuable symbol is a Liz-Taylor-in-her-pomp Cleopatra, which isn’t exactly hard on the eyes. The 5x3 grid is located in what looks like a pharaoh's tomb and there are hieroglyphics written on the wall of the background. The two blazing lamps that illuminate the tomb emit a lovely warm glow and the game’s graphics and depth of colour do a good job of representing all this. The free spins round basically takes place in the same area - the colour scheme just changes to a deep purple.
Musically, everything’s fine. It’s the typical mysterious, dramatic music one associates with films and series set in North Africa and if you usually play on mobile, you’re in luck. The game transfers very well.
Aside from its simplicity, what’s most enjoyable about the base game is the sheer value of both the high-pay and low-pay symbols. There are only 10 paylines, but the dimensions of the grid are relatively small, so it balances out. One of the best features is how the golden scarab beetles serve different purposes simultaneously—they’re Wilds, Scatters and pay symbols, too! While I was playing, I found that they fell fairly regularly.
At first, I thought the free spins round was effectively going to be just the same as the base game. Players can, however, benefit from expanding symbols, which is a nice touch. Despite the lack of complexity, the game’s plenty of fun to play, especially when you see your balance increasing after hitting a winning combo made up of just a few Jacks.
As mentioned above, the standard pay symbols are really valuable. It’s nice knowing you have the potential to win between 75x and 500x on any spin - and that’s just in the base game. The game is highly volatile, and it definitely feels that way sometimes. The max win might seem a little disappointing to some at 5,015x, but when you consider the high value of even the low-pay symbols, it at least seems achievable. The RTP is a very respectable at 96.51%.
I didn’t have high hopes for Ancient Egypt Classic. Although the graphics were fine, it seemed very basic, and the ancient-Egypt motif has been done many times. Once I started playing, though, I quickly saw the appeal - you could find big wins even in the base game. On top of that, Free Spins isn’t too difficult to trigger, and it throws in expanded symbols, too! A great effort!
