You can usually guess what you're getting with a game like Western Wilds. It didn't take me long to figure out that there would be some gun-toting cowboys and fairly valuable wild symbols on display. I was right on both counts but what I didn't predict was the massive 40,000x top win!
Thanks to the Megaways mechanic, there are loads of ways to win a prize in this game. On each of the 6 reels, between 2 and 7 symbols may land and if you have 7 on each, then you've achieved the maximum 117,649 win ways.
Between 3 and 6 matching symbols need to land on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel, to create a payout. Royal symbols offer up to 20x for a group of 6 but picture symbols are even better, reaching 500x. These are pretty decent payouts for standard wins.
Wild symbols substitute for regular payers but won't appear on the first reel during the game. Other wilds may contain a multiplier figure that reaches up to 2x and can appear at all times - they can even multiply by each other when more than one is present at the same time.
As winning symbols land, new ones take their place and you could see a sequence of wins start to grow. This is the beauty of Megaways games with a tumble mechanic; however, there is a catch.
The bonus game trigger in Western Wilds is a run of 4 winning spins / tumbles. Due to the game not wanting to hand out free spins every 5 seconds, you're unlikely to see many decent runs of wins from the same stake.
If you make it through to the free spins game with 4 winning tumbles, you'll get 8 free plays. But 5 and 6 consecutive tumbles will produce more spins. Reels that reach the maximum 7 symbols will lock in place and this will help add additional pay lines whilst you play the bonus.
4 consecutive wins trigger this bonus, giving you 8 free spins. More spins are achievable with extra wins. You could also get one reel locked in place with the full 7 symbol complement and each win gives you an extra x1 multiplier.
Each reel can produce up to 7 symbols, creating a maximum of 117649 paylines. Winning symbols disappear and the new ones take their place.
It could have just been a bad run of spins, but I struggled to make any headway in this game. I lay the blame firmly at the free spins trigger’s door as it makes it very unlikely that you'll see many winning sequences at all. I'm guessing that the hit rate is fairly low and that can make for a pretty monotonous base game.
Despite lowering and increasing my bet, I didn't make it to the free spins bonus naturally. After using the bonus buy, I did take a peek and as predicted, the results were much better. Not only that, the music got a nice tempo lift and evening fell upon the scene. The bonus buy options are 30x, 60x and 120x if you'd like to see 6, 8 or 10 free spins. To get additional locked reels, you can get 6 spins for 60x, 8 spins for 120x and 10 spins for 200x.
You can tell by the size of the individual payouts that a huge win is possible but you really need to nurture your balance if you're going to see the max 40,000x payout. The RTP is just over 96% and the volatility is as high as it can get.
Ironically, a lot of tumbleweed makes its way across the screen while you're playing this game. It was the perfect accompaniment to a long run of non-winning spins. It's a nice enough scene with some mountains in the background and probably my favourite part of the game was the slick Western theme tune. You can approach Western Wilds on your mobile devices if you like and both Android and Apple customers will get what they want.
I managed some decent returns from the bonus game after buying my way in, which won't be available for players in the UK. I walked away 4 times better off than I was at the beginning of the round but this didn't get me back to where I started overall. I can't help but think that everything has been plunged into making this game appealing to high-rollers but more casual players probably aren't going to love the results. If you are purely after occasional huge wins, then this won't be a consideration and you can go ahead and take on the Western Wilds if you're brave enough.
