Meet Fenrir, your friendly neighbourhood dog. Well, not quite. Fenrir is the name of the ferocious wolf and offspring of the god Loki and giantess Angrboða in Norse mythology. He also happens to be the star of this, the latest in the Vikings slot series from Foxium.
We reviewed Vikings Fight for Honour back in July 2024, and this latest instalment sees Foxium going for a darker and more atmospheric game than its predecessor.
Vikings The Saga of Fenrir comes with some pretty cool added extras, such as golden orbs to collect, a free spins round and even the Viking Axe Smash feature. But is Foxium in danger of recycling old material in an already saturated genre of slot, or can Vikings The Saga of Fenrir stand out on its own merits?
Vikings The Saga of Fenrir is a 5-reel, 3-row slot with 20 paylines. You have 4 low-paying letter symbols followed by some mid-paying Norse design icons and finally a male and female warrior. But where this game gets interesting is with the special symbols and features.
Fenrir himself is the wild, which can appear in the base game and turn all of the symbols on the same reel wild. Wild Reels, as they're called, are active for 2 spins in the base game and can appear on 1 to 3 reels during the free spins round, depending on how you choose to enter the bonus game. Being able to choose what you go into the free spins round with is a pretty nice touch, I must say!
There's also the Viking Axe Smash, which activates randomly in the base game and will nudge the reels to create winning combinations.
One of my favourite additions to this new release is the Golden Orb meter. During the base game, any golden orbs are collected and held in a meter above each reel. And 2 orbs to trigger Wild Reels.
Another cool feature is the Hoard of Fenrir whereby if you can land 2 scatter symbols on reels 1 and 3, the fifth real gets covered by Fenrir Hoard boxes. These boxes may reveal a third scatter symbol, which is your key to the base free spins round.
Land 3 Free Spins scatters in the base game to trigger the free spins round. These symbols appear on reels 1, 3 and 5 only. Before you enter the free spins game, you get a choice of 3 features:
Once in the round, Wild Reels can move positions randomly and you can also pick up more free spins by landing more scatters. Golden orbs don’t appear in this feature, but you don’t need them as Wild Reels appear anyway!
Find 2 orbs in the base game to turn your reel into a Wild Reel of Fenrir! Wild Reels remain active for 2 spins in the base game and Free Spins scatter symbols shine through and could trigger the free spins round.
Shatter the screen and smash the symbols on the reels with the Viking’s Axe. This also randomly nudges the reels to create winning combinations.
If 2 scatter symbols appear on reels 1 and 3, the fifth reel gets covered by Fenrir Hoard boxes. Fenrir Hoard boxes may reveal the third Scatter symbol.
Vikings The Saga of Fenrir certainly offers some good winning potential, given that it comes with medium volatility and lots of special features that can help you make winning combos. The RTP is a very average 96.14%, and it would have been nice to see multipliers added to this game, but you can't have everything!
When I began playing Vikings The Saga of Fenrir, I wasn't bowled over by the design. This could be pretty much any Viking-inspired slot, of which there are thousands. However, I had to eat my words after playing the game for a while, as the Wild Reels and Hoard of Fenrir features upped the ante with some pretty cool metal chains, lightning and howling wolves, all animated beautifully.
I also have to admit that the soundtrack was genuinely unnerving with a low and slow Nordic drum beat and ominous mumblings of a warrior behind it.
I have some mixed feelings about Vikings The Saga of Fenrir. The Viking theme has been done to death, but by focusing on a mythical wolf rather than the usual cast of gods, Foxium has done a pretty good job at trying to carve out something original.
The gameplay is upbeat and exciting, and the Wild Reels and golden orbs add to the fast-paced rhythm of the base game. I would have liked to have seen a bit more from the free spins round, such as multipliers or some unique symbols not found in the base game, but with free-moving Wild Reels and the chances for more free spins, I really should stop my whining!
When all is said and done, this is a fun slot with some decent winning potential, but don't expect it to knock your socks off in terms of uniqueness.
