Unusual Suspects is indeed unusual in that it doesn’t have a complex plot, nor will you find any Kevin Spaceys, Gabriel Byrnes or Kaiser Sozes. It does, however, feature a 5x4 reel set along with 20 paylines and an RTP of 96.05%.
The lineup also consists of Golden Wilds, Sticky Frames and Big Boss Bonus rounds. Your low pays are 10-A card symbols, which all award 1x the bet for 5 of a kind, while a set of 3 will land you 0.1x your bet. Worth between 2x and 10x the bet, the higher pays are a Suitcase, Dynamite, Pistol and Handcuffs.
Wilds can land anywhere on the grid and can substitute for any paying symbols except for Scatter and Detective symbols—more on those later. Wilds leave Sticky Frames, which don’t leave the grid until they’ve been used. When more Wilds land within them, they increase the multiplier by +1. A Sticky frame can potentially multiply your winline by x5.
If a moustache-supporting Detective symbol drops, all Sticky frames automatically fill with Wilds, and you still get those multipliers added to your wins.
Scatter symbols can land on any reel and if 2 of them fall, a token gets added to the Free Spin Boost metre at the top of the screen. You will, however, need to accumulate 50 tokens to trigger the Free Spin Bonus round, and the metre will reset when said round is over.
If 2 Scatter symbols land on the top 3 rows, this initiates the Nudging Scatter Respin. The reels with the Scatters will be held and will nudge down 1 row while the other reels respin. The round will continue until 1 of the Scatter symbols reaches the bottom row or until 5 Scatter symbols land. Unfortunately, if the Nudging Scatter Respin game gets activated, it doesn’t add a token to the Bonus Metre.
If 3 Scatter symbols land, you’re automatically put in a patrol car and carted off to the Tom Selleckian detective’s office where, in lieu of a phone call, you’re given 10 Free Spins and a chance to land Big Boss Bonuses. 4 Scatter symbols will give you 15 respins, and 5 will give you 20.
During these rounds, each time a Detective symbol lands, you’ll notice yourself moving along the Big Boss Bonus Trail, which sits in place of the Free Spin Boost metre in the Base game.
There are 4 Big Boss levels, and when you reach one, you’re given 5 extra spins. Big Boss 1 also gives you a 2x multiplier, Big Boss 2 awards a multiplier of 3x, Big Boss 3 gives 5x, while Big Boss 4 offers 10x. You’ve also still got your Wilds, Golden Wilds and Sticky Frames, just like in the base game.
If you’re outside the UK, you might be able to use the bonus purchase option and jump straight to these bonus rounds.
Wilds substitute for pay symbols and further increase your big win potential by leaving Sticky Frames in their wake. Golden Wilds will also spawn more Wilds or Golden Wilds!
Detective symbols fill all Sticky Frames with Wilds and Golden Wilds. Keep an eye out for them so you can unlock Big Boss Multipliers in the Free Spins round, too.
Land at least 3 Scatter symbols and you’ll be taken away to the detective's office. Up to 20 free spins are available.
Unlock these mob bosses during Free Spins rounds for 5 extra spins and a potential 10x multiplier!
Having played a host of other Northern Lights slots, we were very much looking forward to giving this jazzy cops and robbers instalment a try. The attractive 5x4 slot features 20 paylines, a max win of 12,500x, along with Nudges, Reel Respins and Golden Wilds.
The graphics are well-defined and colourful, plus the blurred-out downtown backdrop keeps things engaging without being distracting. The music starts off with a swing band playing a cool blues number, but when you gain access to the Bonus rounds, it switches to some uptempo jazz. The sound effects overall are clear and crisp, helping you stay focused on the action. The characters are a little 1-dimensional, though. The 4 different mob bosses, for example, are basically the same bald crook experimenting with different wigs and fake moustaches. Have I perhaps just given away Unusual Suspects’ shocking plot twist!?
Scatter symbols give you either Nudges and Respins or you get tokens added to the Bonus Boost Metre. This can be frustrating if you prefer one over the other when the drop doesn’t go your way.
That aside, it was the Sticky Frames feature that ended up turning me into a proper reoffender. The fact that they stay on the grid until used and can add multipliers is a great addition to the base game.
The Free Spin Bonus rounds, however, take things up to another level. That’s where you want to be if you’re after a chance of getting near that 12,500x max win. That said, as fun as the Bonus rounds are, they are limited to the concept of simply moving along the metre to see how many respins and multipliers you can get. It’d be nice if there was a little more variety.
Players will see a mixture of high and low wins on a fairly regular basis thanks to the medium volatility. There are plenty of Scatter symbols plus 20 paylines, not to mention a RTP of 96% and a 12,500x max win.
Both the base game and bonus rounds are a lot of fun but it would have been nice to have a bit of variety in the bonus rounds—just personal preference. In a nutshell, if you’re after something that’s engaging, easy to play and potentially generous, Unusual Suspects could be a perfect choice.
