The first thing to point out is that it will probably take a Herculean effort to comply with the rules to take you out of the base game. It's not that it is complicated to understand but rather that it is fairly difficult to achieve—especially with pretty high volatility. However, it is possible, so let's see what features this game has in store.
Not every review will mention wild symbols as a noteworthy feature, but we think that the 2 distinctive wilds available in Sweet Alchemy 2 deserve to be highlighted.
The first is a Striped Wild that can land and substitute all others to create a winning combo. As it does so, it gives a bit of a boost to the avalanche mechanic and continues to remove all symbols across the entire horizontal and vertical row on which it sits.
The second wild is the Gobstopper Wild which can have up to 5 lives allocated to it and make it stick around for a little while.
To unleash the power of free spins, you won't need scatter symbols or other special combos to occur. In theory, it is easy and all you need to do is continue to hit more and more wins.
With each combo that lands, the same number of chocolate squares are removed from the outer reaches of the grid. Further combos continue to remove these squares and the bonus is triggered as the last chocolate block disappears.
The bad news is that this could be quite a number of consecutive wins to bring this elusive feature into the light. Unfortunately, when you get there, you only receive 4 free spins.
As the free spins begin, you are treated to the addition of 2x2 symbols that will hopefully bring more wins along for the ride. If you manage to wipe out all of the chocolate blocks once again, you are then awarded a further 4 free spins and the cluster blocks become 3x3. This happens once again making the total a possible 12 free spins with a large 4x4 symbol in play to help land winning combos.
There is an additional feature upgrade to look out for. Winning symbols will be added to the metre to the side of the reels and when this is full, you are awarded a potion bottle. If you manage to make it through all of the above levels, then you are taken to a bonus wheel with however many potion bottles you have in your possession.
Each bottle represents a spin of the wheel and the wheel will provide a multiplier figure that is used to increase the winnings you received thus far. Confused? Don’t be—it sounds more complicated than it is.
When you clear the game board and have no more chocolate left, you are awarded 4 free spins. complete this process 3 times during the bonus round to have a chance of spinning the multiplier wheel.
Striped wild symbols will remove the entire horizontal and vertical rows to create space for more potential wins and remove those pesky chocolate blocks. Gobstopper Wilds might stick around for up to 5 spins.
Sweet Alchemy 2 is, arguably, an improvement on the first instalment from a few years ago. The main alchemist/witch-like character is present once again, and the same grid mechanic is still in place.
The original didn't enjoy anywhere near as much success as other similar titles from Play’n GO in the gridded slots niche such as Reactoonz, for example, but that hasn't stopped them from giving it another go. It's not a bad game at all, but it's just a little too difficult to get that important bonus round up and running.
Think pink, fluffy, sweet and sugary and you get the general idea. The young alchemist has become a little more sultry than she was in her first appearance and the soundtrack is fairly forgettable.
In its defence, we have to say the game does look great on all devices including mobiles, so feel free to take it out and about with you if this is your bag.
You have probably gathered by now that we didn't appreciate spending so long battling with the base game in order to trigger the free spins bonus. And we have to say that we were more than just a little insulted when we finally got there to see we only had 4 free spins.
Unfortunately, we enjoyed the bonus round for about 10 seconds before we were booted out of the sweet shop. Obviously, this won't always be the case, but do manage your expectations and budget accordingly.
The official party line is medium/high volatility, but it felt like it was edging more towards the high end in our experience—this is the price you pay for a massive potential 10,000x payout. The RTP is perfectly reasonable and prudent slot fans will also be able to enjoy this game from just 10p per spin.
Sweet Alchemy 2 presents an interesting setup in that you have to remove the outer layers of the grid in order to progress. Had it been easier to achieve and more free spins were available, this game would have got a big thumbs up from us. Perhaps, it's time to go back to the original Sweet Alchemy slot instead.
