She's had nearly a year off to compose herself and think of some new ideas to help separate this sequel from the original Stone Gaze of Medusa's slot. I can see straight away that there are some glaring similarities but the devil is in the detail and we'll have to take a closer look to see exactly what Stakelogic has done with this follow-up creation.
As with the first game, you’re working with a grid slot that encompasses the scatter pays mechanic. However, unlike the first version, the number of rows is not set in stone – excuse the pun. Each row can deliver between four and seven symbols and this might help to land winning combos more frequently.
You need at least eight matching symbols anywhere on the grid to create a win and the lowest can get you a measly 0.30x win for a group of eight or nine and a maximum of 2.50x for 15 or more matching symbols. The highest-paying symbol gets you up to 50x.
Winning symbols disappear and new ones come into play creating what is known as a tumble in this game. You may be familiar with the words ‘cascade’ or ‘avalanche’ in other slots.
Multiplier symbols have a value displayed on them worth between 2x and 1,000x and these can land anywhere at any time. If a win takes place, then you might see single or multiple multiplier symbols adding their values together to help boost your payouts.
Power symbols make a return and as far as I can tell, they have just one slight modification. Level 1 symbols destroy any one and two-of-a-kind combos and level two will get rid of one, two and three-of-a-kinds. The third level destroys anything up to four-of-a-kind and this is slightly better than before.
Comparing the two creations, I didn't find that the power symbols made much of a difference and it will all depend on how often they show up.
To play for free, you need at least four bonus symbols and this will fetch you 10 free spins. Five bonus symbols get you 15 spins and six will deliver the maximum of 30 free spins. You can also pick up more free spins throughout the bonus game each time you land three or more bonus symbols.
The multiplier symbols still get added together if more than one exists and the big difference between this feature round and the base game is that the multiplier doesn't reset after a losing tumble.
As with other Stakelogic games, there is a Super Stake option and this adds 25% on top of your bet amount to help increase the chances of landing the free spins bonus.
Outside the UK, you have the option to buy directly into the bonus round for 100x.
I spun the reels for a long time in an attempt to trigger the bonus game but eventually, I went for the expensive entry ticket, but I did get compensated with 30 free spins. After what seemed like an eternity, the multiplier had grown quite nicely and my last few payouts were boosted by over 50x. My final tally exceeded the 100x buy-in and I walked off with 758x in the bank.
Power symbols can remove smaller combos of matching symbols and if you’re lucky enough to witness the third level, you see anything up to four-of-a-kind combos disappear with new symbols coming into play.
Four, five or six bonus symbols will deliver between 10 and 30 free spins. The multiplier builds up during the feature round and doesn't reset after a losing spin. Towards the end of your spins, you may be lucky enough to see quite a considerable boost to your payouts.
As with the original game, Medusa's base game really struggled to get off the ground and despite the multipliers and power symbols waiting in the wings, they didn't turn up very often and it left me watching small value combos deliver insignificant prizes.
I'm glad I made my way into the bonus game, even though it cost 100x, as not only did the wins far exceed those from the base game, but it's also more interesting watching the modifiers come to life more frequently. I assume that's part of the deal for the feature round and wasn't just a coincidence.
Hardly anything has changed since Medusa first appeared on my laptop screen and it seems a shame that Stakelogic didn't take this opportunity to add a few finer touches to the creation. That said, it looked good the first time around and it's still pretty decent now with Medusa holding her arrow and emerging from the bottom half of a snake. Smaller mobile screens display the details just fine.
As suspected, that wasn't enough here to make a sequel worthwhile as everything feels very similar and the features haven't been manipulated enough to spice things up at all. I still managed to grab a huge win though during the bonus game and for some players that might be enough of a temptation to get their fingers on the spin button of Stone Gaze of Medusa 2.
