Stepping Diamonds is a ‘who's who’ of the fruit machine world! You've got horseshoes, gold bells, plums, lemons and more. The luxury feel is created by the diamonds and this helps to produce the crossover of themes that you'll find when you load up this game. Diamonds take centre stage with their power to trigger two features, so hope to see as many of them as possible.
Whilst spinning the reels in Stepping Diamonds, you're looking at 20 paylines and a great deal of fruit machine history. These traditional symbols have made their way into the online slot fraternity in the shape of cherries, plums and various other iconography that many of us remember from our days in the arcade.
You'll need to create a matching group of three, four or five symbols to land a win and the lowest payers are the fruit with a max 5x win for plums and oranges. Horseshoes, bells, bars and red sevens can pay up to 50x for a five-of-a-kind. This is only possible with the red sevens though – the others are not quite as valuable.
Wilds pay the same as the red sevens, so expect to see a 50x win for a group of five of these, and they'll also substitute for all other symbols except for the diamonds.
Some diamonds will land and produce a regular multiplier figure while others will be a different colour and represent a jackpot prize.
You can pick up any of these prizes if and when you land a regular diamond along with a special diamond symbol. Special diamonds will trigger the step ‘n win feature, which increases the value of other diamonds on the reels.
The game’s main bonus is a respin feature with three spins available and these are reset each time you land a diamond symbol. The diamonds may be regular cash multipliers or they could be jackpot prizes.
It doesn't seem particularly difficult to trigger the feature and within a few minutes, I was there winning well over 80x. Some areas outside the UK may have direct purchase options into this feature zone but they weren't available at the time of completing this review.
Regular diamond symbols see their values increase thanks to landing special diamond symbols. The number of steps will improve the diamond payouts by up to 5x.
As diamonds land, they begin to light up the trail and you'll need at least six of them to spark this feature. The more you get, the bigger the grid will be during the bonus game. Landing diamonds and jackpots will reset your three respins and you can still experience the Step ‘n Win feature as well.
4,000x doesn't sound like the biggest max win but at least that makes it feel more realistic. However, you will probably need to see some big jackpot prizes if you're going to squeeze your balance close to that figure.
The probability of doing so is less than one in a billion so good luck with that! Various RTPs are available and in the UK this will be up to 96.20%. The volatility is medium, but after spinning for quite some time, I thought it felt a little higher than this.
My returns weren't fantastic and even though I hit quite a large lump sum in the bonus game, my bankroll wasn't overly enthused. That's not to say that you won't pick up some big rewards during your adventure, though.
Not too much effort has gone into this game's design although the symbols are quite nicely crafted. The background is the futuristic grid that slides towards the bottom of the screen as you play. A few nice neon touches here and there help to keep things interesting and you can also play the game on mobile devices as well. The soundtrack is similar to many game shows I've seen on TV and quite unforgettable at the same time.
I certainly appreciate what these diamonds are trying to do for my balance, but I find the idea a little convoluted. If you want to add multipliers to an instant cash prize, then go ahead but don't make me wait for special diamond symbols that may or may not make their way to my balance!
The bonus game offers a little more action, knowing that you're going to pick up all the cash prizes that are landing and there's also a chance you could see the big Mega jackpot with its 1,500x top payout.
Stepping Diamonds has left me with a fairly bland taste in my mouth – a bit like a rich tea biscuit. However, there's still a chance that this simple fruit machine setup and the occasional big win might be enough to persuade you to have a spin.
