It's good to see that Play’n GO is attempting something a little different with this latest creation – even if it is fairly similar to what everybody else is doing! Some players might think it's a bit of a step backwards but I see it as a return to a tried and tested path that should encourage a few former fans to come back and give them another go.
Myth of Dead starts with a fairly familiar offering with five reels and three rows granting regular payouts across 10 paylines. The royal symbols can grab you wins worth up to 5x and the picture symbols are made up of various Egyptian gods – these pay a maximum of 40x.
Wild symbols will substitute for those outlined above and you'll also notice that god symbols can hold extra cash values worth up to 5x.
If a Wild Respin triggers, the values overlaid across the god symbols are collected to offer you an instant prize. You’ll obviously need a god symbol and a wild symbol to land at the same time!
Playing for free requires 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols and these offer you 10, 15 or 20 free spins. Before you play your free spins, you get to choose an enhancer and this comes in four forms. The first is a Pyramid Power Booster which increases the frequency at which the god symbols will land. This also means that you'll see those instant cash prizes turning up more frequently as well. Throughout your free spins, you'll hope to progress along the Coronation Path and this happens each time you land four wild symbols. With many Play’n GO slots, I find it hard to grasp the stats too tightly. The max wins are often wishful thinking, in many people's opinion, and the hit rates can be quite low. With Myth of Dead, this developer has gone back to a respectable but achievable 3,000x max win. Even though I found it hard to trigger the bonus game, I think the wild multipliers and instant wins of up to 250x could help some players achieve such a sum.
The hit rate is still quite low by modern standards with around one in five spins creating a win. However, the medium volatility should see many of those payouts keeping your balance bobbing along The Nile quite nicely.
Everything looks and feels typically dramatic in true Ancient Egypt style. Those god symbols are individually valuable and clearly a lot of effort has gone into creating these. In terms of set design, the reels are hovering above what I assume is The Nile and a couple of pyramids appear in the background. Palm trees sway in the breeze and you couldn't really ask for too much more from the stereotypical Egyptian soundtrack.
All of the above is available on a range of devices and players who prefer to access slots on their mobile phones can also enjoy this crisp and colourful display.
