Muerto en Mictlān Review
In Aztec mythology, Mictlān is the underworld that people travel to when they die with various guides making sure that they make their way through. Play'n GO decided to use this intriguing notion for the basis of Muerto en Mictlān which literally translates to Dead in Mictlān. This slot plays on 5-reels with 10 paylines along a Mexican/Halloween theme.
As you journey through Mictlān, you'll be escorted by Catrin and Catrina to ensure that you remain victorious and not get lost. Throughout your journey, you'll find yourself with a free spins round with four different levels along with various wilds and multipliers to help you along.
Design
There's a short cinematic as you open up the slot guiding you through the colourful streets. As soon as the slot opens up, you'll find yourself on a brightly lit street celebrating Day of the Dead. There are various flowers on the ground and surrounding the reels which look incredibly beautiful. On top of that, all the street is vibrant and full of eye-catching colours making it look stunning. Amazingly, there are animations including the wind blowing with flags or petals moving about which definitely gives life to the slot.
Thankfully, all the symbols on the reels match the extraordinary visuals in the background. The two characters animate on the reels and fit in with the Day of the Dead theme with skull faces mixed with steampunk outfits. Other symbols include roses, hats, skulls and bright coloured lower paying symbols.
Throughout spins, there's a soft guitar score that plays out with the occasional accordion playing in the distance. It definitely fits in with the theme and feels a little melancholic at times. During free spins, the music intensifies a little but the main difference is the background changing to take you on the path to Mictlān.
Gameplay
As soon as Muerto en Mictlān opens up, you'll notice that there are only 5-reels with 10 paylines. There aren't many paylines to follow and the only real feature is the free spins round. It's all relatively straightforward to follow making that you don't need to be a seasoned player to pick up the gameplay.
In terms of menus, you can find the spin button at the bottom of the screen along with the bet level and autospin button. Further to the left, there is an 'i' button with additional settings such as paytable or sound.
Win Potential
Muerto en Mictlān has a decent RTP of 96.20% which is over the average standard - which we like to see. You can expect high volatility gameplay which essentially means that wins will be less frequent but higher when they do.
The maximum win for this slot is 10,000x your stake which can be achieved through the free spins by reaching level 4 with multipliers and wilds. During our 200 spins, we triggered the free spins feature once which is one thing to take note of.
Our Verdict
There's no denying that Mexican slots are hit and miss, thankfully this one is definitely a hit! Muerto en Mictlān is not only breathtaking in terms of design, but it's so mesmerising to watch the reels spin in anticipation of landing scatters.
You'll literally feel like you are travelling to Mictlān with the whole atmosphere and that you'll find some decent wins along the way. The only downside is that the game is driven by the free spins round which can be difficult to trigger.
Despite that, Muerto en Mictlān is definitely worth playing and you'll find yourself absolutely blown away by the design and free spins round.
