Curse of Ra

Reviewed by Paul Clare Last updated:

Ra’s been put through the wringer by slot developers over the last decade and now the poor chap’s been cursed. If you can lift the Curse of Ra by way of Game and Fortune coins, free spins and flying scarabs, you might be able to make your way towards that 10,000x top win.

Curse of Ra Features

The setup here is 5x3 and you have 20 pay lines. The royal symbols max out at 10x for a five-of-a-kind win made up of aces. 4 picture symbols peak at 100x and the same can be said for the Wild symbols. These will substitute for all other regular payers but become a little more interesting during the bonus game.

Before you reach the bonus area, you might encounter the Guaranteed Win feature. Not so much a feature but rather a payout for the heck of it! It’ll occur after a losing spin and realign all of the reels to create a win.

Bonus Games

Triggering the bonus game requires 3 to 5 scatter symbols and for this, you'll receive 10 to 20 spins. Some players outside the UK can activate this directly for 75x or they can start to use their Game and Fortune coins. You collect these coins along the way and you can exchange them or part exchange them for some free spins or Nitro Spins.

The free spins option activates the bonus game whilst choosing Nitro Spins produces a better chance of triggering the bonus game naturally. The Super Spinner is also present and the first time I encountered this was during Everest some months ago.

The Super Spinner is a prize wheel that offers a number of outcomes including Nitro Spins and instant wins.

Upon entry to the Free Spins game, you can gamble the number of spins for a chance to land even more - be careful as you could end up losing everything. As you enter the Free Spins bonus, you may or may not be pleased to know that there isn't much here in the way of change. The game plays out in a fairly similar fashion except that Scatter symbols now collect in a meter above the screen and offer extra spins, and there’s a multiplier of up to 10x. Wild symbols make full use of their wings as they move one position between each spin.

Curse of Ra - Flying Scarabs

Flying Scarabs

These Wild symbols are pretty basic during the base game, but they come to life during the bonus round. As well as substituting for other regular payers, these guys use their wings and move around to grab wins in different places.

Curse of Ra - Free Spins

Free Spins

Up to 20 free spins are yours when you land 3–5 Scatter symbols. During the bonus, you’ll collect Scatters with multiplier values up to 10x and add extra spins at the same time.

Curse of Ra - Guaranteed Win

Guaranteed Win

I don’t know why, but every so often the reels rearrange themselves into a winning formation and pay you a prize. Who doesn’t love that?

Curse of Ra Review

Hasn't poor old Ra been pestered enough by the slots world? He's a very popular character and I guess as god of the sun, you've got to expect a bit of attention from time to time.

Design

Whilst the developer hasn't gone over the top with the design, everything still feels well thought out and carefully crafted. There's no clutter here, which I like, and it helps reproduce things on smaller mobile screens as well. Bright, colourful symbols and various gods adorn the reels and similar symbols are etched into the wall behind. It's a fairly forgettable soundtrack but I can't remember ever playing an Egyptian slot that particularly stood out in that department.

Gameplay

Watching the Game and Fortune coins build up adds an extra layer of excitement and the wild symbols will also keep your heart rate up. A guaranteed win from time to time is a nice touch but let's face it, everybody wants to be in the bonus game. With the additional multipliers, this was where I saw my balance start to grow and using a mixture of game coins and credit, I managed to get there quite quickly. Unfortunately, players in the UK will realistically have to wait it out and watch for Scatter symbols.

Win Potential

Once you overcome the obstacle of the base game, you could see some decent wins pushing you towards the maximum 10,000x prize. The high volatility will keep you on your toes and the RTP is pretty standard at 96%.

My Verdict

Is it just another Egyptian-themed slot? Kind of, but it does have the added spice that Four Leaf Gaming likes to provide. Collecting the Game and Fortune coins is a fairly unique proposition and it can make any theme a little more exciting. If you've not come across this developer before, why not see what they've got to offer?
