Our canine adventurer is on a quest to pick up big wins across five reels and four rows. There are 14 ways to hit a payout and these occur thanks to low and high-paying symbols. The majority of symbols will fail to return your bet total and even the highest-paying symbol can only get you up to 2x. Wild symbols may return 10x if you have five of them along a win line.
To improve these pitiful payouts, you need the expanding wild multiplier symbols and additional multiplier adder symbols to land more often than not. From my experience, you won't be disappointed.
Expanding wild multiplier symbols appear as silver or gold icons with silver ones covering a 1x2 area and gold ones covering the entire reel. As they expand, they might receive a random multiplier value worth up to 100x and this should improve your rewards from their original starting point.
Wins can include multiple expanding wild symbols and are added together to give you further boosts. The multiplier adder symbol is another wild and can bring up to three multipliers to the expanding wild symbols. Multiplier values range from 2x up to 100x and will count as a wild symbol when it forms part of a win line combo.
Between 3 and 5 scatter symbols landing on the reels at the same time will ignite the bonus game. 3 scatter symbols will start you off with 8 free spins, 4 get your 10 spins and 5 begin the feature with 12 free spins. Along with your 12 spins, you also get at least one expanding wild symbol guaranteed to land on the first spin.
Your expanding wild symbols are persistent throughout the feature and you'll see them moving around the grid between each spin. If they land on the same reel, they can merge with each other and combine their multipliers.
For every extra scatter symbol that lands throughout the game, an extra free spin is yours. The bonus buy options carry a fairly hefty price tag apart, from the Bonus Hunt Feature Spin which makes each spin 5 times more likely to trigger the feature and costs 3x.
For 50x, you get at least two wild symbols guaranteed with each spin and for 150x, you'll see a random number of the scatter symbols that will offer between 8 and 12 free spins.
Silver wilds cover a 1x2 area and gold ones cover the whole reel. As they expand, they can take on a random multiplier worth up to 100x and they can also swallow up any multiplier adder symbols which are also worth up to 100x.
The Trail of Treats begins when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols. For this, you receive 8, 10 or 12 free spins and expanding wild symbols are now persistent. They move around the grid with each spin and can combine their multipliers to improve your payouts. Extra spins are available and if you enter the game with 5 scatter symbols, at least 1 expanding wild will appear on the first spin.
I'm not going to lie, but I was starting to panic when I first viewed the paytable! I thought it might be impossible to see any decent wins given that you need wild multipliers to expand all the time. Luckily, they didn't disappoint me and I didn't tire of seeing them throughout my spins. However, they can land in awkward places and that won't help your balance at all.
As they move around during the bonus game and remain persistent, you should see your wins progress further and players outside the UK might want to try the buy-in option if they fail to hit the scatter symbols early on.
There's a top win of 15,000x but that's seen like another world away in my opinion.
If you've played any Mexico-themed slots in the past, then you'll know what to expect from this game. There's an obligatory waterfall in the background and a couple of lanterns keep the fires burning beside the reels. Lush foliage separates the foreground from the background and the reels are set into carved stone, as is the fashion with these games.
You don't get much animation from the furry little fella apart from when you fail to hit the spin button for a prolonged period of time and all of a sudden he wakes up as you commence your spins once more.
It looks fine on mobiles and desktops alike and while it's not the most original setup, it is still a good-looking game.
Could I have asked for more from Ancient Paws? Perhaps, but what it does offer, it offers in abundance. Those expanding multipliers will grace your spins with high frequency and I found that the win potential was pretty decent thanks to these. The bonus game lifted things up slightly but it felt like overall this slot was missing perhaps one extra feature or modifier. It's not a bad effort and I'd happily play it again, so feel free to get involved!
