Slots developer Play’n GO has won Game Studio of the Year at the CasinoBeats Game Developer Awards 2023, in recognition of another strong year for the Swedish gaming pioneers.

The great and good of the iGaming world donned their finery for the prestigious CasinoBeats award ceremony in Valletta, Malta last month, to watch Play’n GO lift the award. Coming at a time of fast growth for the developer, both through the number of games on offer, and through the number of casinos partnering with Play’n GO to deliver their games, the accolade is another spring in the step for a game studio that has been increasingly finding its stride.

Competition in slot development is strong, with studios constantly innovating in both concept and technology. Developers like NetEnt, BGaming, ELK Studios, Playtech and Pragmatic Play all scooped awards, with Play’n GO pressured down to the wire by exceptional developers on all sides.

Play’n GO Chief Commercial Officer Magnus Olsson welcomed the award, calling it a ‘testament’ to another strong year for the company.

“The Game Studio of the Year Award is a testament to our strong performance around the world in the last 12 months, and gives us the impetus to carry that work into the remainder of 2023 and beyond."

"The strength of our existing portfolio, in addition to our new releases, is clear. Operators in regulated spaces who are growing their market share are using Play’n GO titles to help retain and entertain their players."

“This award is a strong signal that our approach is working in this era of increased regulation, but this is just the beginning. We’ve had a strong 12 months and Play'n GO is growing across the board. We are determined to help forward-thinking operators do the same with their businesses."

Game Studio of the Year is one of the most sought-after awards presented at the ceremony, a badge of honour for any slots developer looking for increased industry recognition.

Why Play’n GO deserves this award

A quick look at Play’n GO’s output is enough to clarify why they were so successful in picking up the award. The calibre of games emerging from Play’n GO, especially in the past 12 months, has been astonishing. Rather than trotting out rehashed versions of slots we’ve all played before, their studio has been creating some truly innovative titles, with interesting concepts and game mechanics that spark the intrigue of even the most veteran of slots fans.

Viking Rune Apocalypse is one of the newest games to come from Play’n GO and demonstrates perfectly the level of creativity going on inside their studios. The Norse gods-themed slot hides a plethora of cool features and bonus rounds, delivering action-packed gameplay with an ever-present threat of some seriously big wins.

Wilds, modifiers, an advanced free spins round and mystery symbols—this game has got the lot—and it all comes wrapped up in highly impressive graphics and animations.

It’s hard to overstate the level of design going on here. From the audiovisuals to the intricate maths model, Play’n GO have seriously raised the bar with this game. Highly volatile with a 96.00% RTP, there’s scope for big wins in here too. Up to 10,000x is available, so you better hope the Norse gods are smiling on you when you give this one a spin.

Another example of Play’n GO pushing the boundaries of the slots genre is Gerard’s Gambit. This is a game Play’n GO has dubbed an ‘educational slot experience’, blurring the lines between video games and conventional slots. Here, players progress through various levels of the game with a progressive storyline adding new layers of depth that you wouldn’t expect from a slot title.

Travel through different countries and experience various challenges—with variable volatility. These include respins, sticky wild-respins, expanding wilds and more, depending on which level of the game you’re at.

At its heart, of course, this is still a video slot with a 96.20% RTP and up to 3,000x to be won. But the quality of the gameplay here sets this apart from much of the competition and makes this one to watch.

Play’n GO’s approach is too good to ignore

In an industry that can often fall victim to the same tired tropes, the inventiveness and sheer commitment to outstanding player experience makes Play’n GO one of the most exciting developers in the business.

Worthy winners and then some, Play’n GO are out there setting the standard for other game studios to meet—all ultimately to the benefit of players who get to enjoy much more thrilling and entertaining slots action.

Play’n GO themselves have said there’s more in the tank and few would bet against them having another good year in the 12 months to come. But certainly, now other game developers will be casting a closer eye and trying their best to outdo the work coming out of this studio.
