Play’n GO has been trying to perfect this idea of unleashing modifiers and eventually triggering a few free spins for a while now. There have been a couple of good efforts lately and they gave it a good go in Spark of Genius, which offers a slightly different setup and you should probably check that one out as well.
The setting might not be entirely clear but one thing that is certain is that you'll need 4 or more matching symbols to land a win. There is a caveat and these symbols must touch horizontally or vertically.
As winning symbols disappear, you'll get new ones dropping down to take their place and you could trigger further wins this way. There are 5 lower-paying symbols with maximum payouts of 30x for a 20+ group and 4 higher-paying symbols that show various animals on them. The top reward here is 100x.
You can improve your payouts when special symbols turn up. You'll get 5 with each spin and they all have up to 3 lives. Less lives are better in this case as your aim is to destroy them. When they are adjacent to a win, the winning group disappears and so does one of the special symbol’s lives. Get it down to zero and our mate to the side of the screen will fire off a modifier.
If it's a multiplier, then between 1x and 4x comes into play and this increases the multiplier at the top of the screen. It's possible to keep growing this multiplier indefinitely until you hit a losing spin.
Crosses will destroy symbols in a cross pattern, unsurprisingly. Destroy symbols will remove groups of symbols as if they were a winning combo and transform symbols will replace other symbols and hopefully kickstart a payout.
Occasionally, you might see up to 6 wilds added to the screen and these will substitute for other regular payers.
Once you've destroyed 5 special symbols, you can help yourself to 4 free spins and now you get a guaranteed win. The multiplier value that used to reset between spins no longer does so. This means it stays persistent and will help out any wins throughout the free spins bonus.
It's possible to retrigger your spins by landing more wins and destroying 5 more special symbols. All of your special symbols stay throughout the duration of the bonus.
Special symbols have 3 lives, but destroy one and you can unleash a number of modifiers and eventually some free spins. You could see wilds, destroyed symbols, multipliers and symbol transformations.
Once you’ve destroyed 5 special symbols, you’ll get 4 free spins. Any current multipliers go with you to the bonus and don’t reset. Special symbols stay for the duration of the bonus game and more spins can be triggered.
Whilst I do like the features and modifiers on display, it's going to take a herculean effort to get anywhere close to that 15,000x top win. The only way I can see it happening is during your free spins if you manage to retrigger them many times and build up some ridiculous multiplier. I wouldn't be holding out for the top payout if I were you.
That doesn't mean that you can't win some decent returns and even during the base game I saw regular winning sequences that produced payouts in excess of 15x. The volatility is high so while you might get some good wins along the way, the majority of the time will see your balance cowering in the corner as you hope for a big reward. The RTP it's pretty respectable at 96.20%.
The main character in Temple of Tollan is incredibly ripped but does seem to have a bit of a problem with the lower half of his legs. Presumably this invention is some form of crossover between human and animal and it must be playing havoc with his Achilles tendons.
He offers a few choice words throughout the adventure and really gets into his role as the free spins arrive. The pan pipes disappear and this chap seems to want to take over the world with his rage and fury. And in an odd twist of fate, the traditional soundtrack is replaced with some old-school jungle music. I don't know why, but I approve immensely!
Temple of Tollan and other recent games from Play’n GO will appeal to a particular type of slot fan. You've got to appreciate a game that ebbs and flows and requires other things to happen while you wait for the good stuff to arrive. It's not everyone's cup of tea as it can mean dull patches here and there but some of you will love it.
